even with a filter, i still fail

While it’s been a few months since my five-year relationship ended, I think I’ve finally gotten the dating roster* thing down.

And I hate it.

But that’s beside the point.

The point is, I set filters on my dating apps that I thought would help me find better-qualified matches.

Like: “looking for a long-term relationship” and “the hottest thing you can do is not be a shitty person.”

Yet somehow, the duds still make it through.

Which leads to stress, wasted energy, and waaaay too much time spent talking to the wrong people.

I’ve literally wasted two months texting someone who acted interested, only to realize they were just there to boost their ego. Like... whaat??

But honestly? That’s exactly what happens when you skip segmentation in your email marketing.

Without strong filters (aka, solid segments), you end up sending the same message to everyone.

Meaning you’re spending energy on subscribers who were never the right fit (or aren’t ready right now) and you end up missing the chance to show up for the people who are.

*Not familiar with dating in 2025? Ahh, how envious of you I am. Apparently, we don't want to keep all our eggs in one basket since ghosting is so common and emotional intelligence is so rare. So it's perfectly "normal" to be talking & going on dates with multiple people. Hence, the term, "dating roster".

Stop Sending Emails to Everyone

Segmentation is one of those things people know they should do, but push off because it sounds like a whole project. Spoiler: it’s not.

If you’re sending every email to your entire list, you’re probably hitting people with stuff they don’t care about yet (or anymore).

That tanks your engagement, can hurt your sender reputation, and makes it way more likely your emails end up in spam.

Segmenting helps you send the right message to the right people at the right time. It's an instant way to improve click rates, conversions, and deliverability, all by making your emails feel more relevant.

✍🏼 Quick Segments to Set Up ✍🏼

You don’t need 12. Just start with these:

  • Engaged – interacted with your emails in the last 90 days
  • At-Risk – hasn't interacted with your emails in 90-180 days
  • Unengaged – hasn't interacted with your emails in 180+ days
  • Recent Customers – bought in the last 90 days
  • Loyal Customers – 2+ purchases
  • Engaged, No Purchase – clicking but not buying

That's it! For now anyways. Yes, you can always dive into your audience's behaviors and segment them further based on the data.

But, you don't *need* to do anything too fancy at first. Just start with the basics so you can get a better view of how your subscribers are interacting with your emails :)

Your 5-Minute Challenge

Log into Klaviyo (or your email platform) and create one segment you don’t already have. That’s it. One. It takes waay less than 5 minutes and could seriously change how your next email performs!

(BONUS: create all three of the engaged segments and send your next email to each segment separately 👀)

Reading: Scythe & Sparrow!!! I've been waiting for what feels like forever to read this. It's book 3 in The Ruinous Love Trilogy. Think: dark romance meets comedy meets thriller. I adooooore it -- it cracks me up!

Listening: Chronicles of the Darkest Hour has been on repeat in my ears when I'm working lately. He's known for writing songs based on (surprise, surprise) dark romance books 😆 But the lyrics are so lovely, highly recommend!!

Wellness Goal: I'm in Michigan, and it always feels harder for me to stay on track with my wellness goals tbh. Sooo, nothing this week, just trying not to binge eat (a bad habit when I'm on "vacation" and not meal prepping).

Obsessing Over: Painting seashells!!!! It's a cute lil gift to find seashells, paint them, and then turn them into magnets for my loved ones back in this frigid ass state lol.

AEM BTS Update: Eeeeek!! I recently worked with Chloe on getting a STUNNING, on-brand Dubsado setup, and I'm obsessed?? And already seeing inquiries rolling in via my new contact form?? Can't wait to see everything come together once the site's new copy & design go live!! 😍

Segmentation doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to happen. Especially if you want your emails to land, get clicked, and actually support sales.

The more intentional you are with who sees what, the more likely they are to care, click, and convert.

And the best bonus? Your deliverability and sender reputation improve too. It’s one of those small tweaks that pay off again and again.

I've still got a couple more email quick fixes coming your way, but if you already know you want more hands-on help for June (or anytime after), feel free to reach out!

Whether you need strategy, setup, or someone to take it off your plate entirely, I’ve got space opening up soon. :)

Edition #127 Tuesday, May 6th, 2025 "your maintenance request is complete!" ↓ Was the text I got a few hours after the maintenance crew randomly left my apartment... without saying a word. And the black spots I had reported? Still there. Just smudged now from their "cleaning" attempt. Cue my facial expression: 🤨🤨🤨 But lemme back up: A few weeks ago, I noticed these random black spots popping up on my carpet. Not knowing what else to do, I grabbed some cleaner and a wash rag. Wiped them up....

Edition #127 Tuesday, April 29th, 2025 ok, i swear i do more than just go on dates ↓ Buuuut they do make for the most interesting stories lately. Everything else? Pretty routine. And because I’m me, I tend to find marketing parallels in everything. Especially the chaotic stuff I tell myself I’m doing ✨for the plot✨. Like this one date I went on in Michigan:He was funny over text. Thoughtful. Easy to talk to. Didn’t vote for Trump. (The bar? In hell. I know.) So we make plans to meet. He texts...

Edition #126 Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025 and honestly? i'm glad i did. ↓ So... long story short? I got stood up. I’d been talking to this ex-marine for a month. Now, I've had a few... unsavory encounters with marines since my move to Wilmy (aka less than an hour from a marine base). So my guard was already up. Like, sky-high walls. But he was super consistent. Easy to talk to. Sent me $200 to have a great St. Paddy’s with my friends. Does the $$ really matter? Ofc not. But he was in Michigan,...
